Festive Bird Feeders

The birds need a little helping hand this time of year, so why not get the kids involved and make up a festive bird feeder treat for your feathery friends

I have found two different bird feeder ideas for you to try. Im sure the birds will love either, so why not give both a try.

Christmas Shape Feeders

You will need:

  • a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper
  • cookie cutters in your favourite festive shapes
  • a skewer, straw or similar
  • ribbon, string, or twine for hanging your treats
  • a saucepan
  • 250g bird seed
  • 100g suet or lard

Start by lining a baking tray with some greaseproof paper. Spray the inside of your cookies cutters and lay them out on the tray.

Weigh out the lard or suet, and carefully melt it in a saucepan. Take it off the heat and mix in the bird seed until well combined.

Press the mixture into the cookie cutters. making sure it is firmly in the edges. Use a skewer or straw to make a hole in the mixture.

Leave it to set in the fridge for at least an hour, or preferably overnight. Gently press out the shapes. Thread your ribbon or twine through the hole and hang outside for the birds.

Christmas Tree Feeders

You will need:

  • ice cream cones
  • bird seed
  • peanut butter
  • cheerios
  • pipe cleaners or ribbon for hanging your trees

Pierce the end of the cone and attach a ribbon to or pipe cleaner to hang it.

Spread a layer of bird seed on a tray or plate.

Smear the ice cream cone in peanut butter.

Roll the ice cream cone in the bird seed, so that the seed sticks to the peanut butter. Gently press in as much seed as you can. Be careful not to push too hard or your cone will break. Attach cheerios to the side of the cone using a little peanut butter if necessary.

Hang your feeder on the tree and watch the birds enjoy their treat.
