Your budding little superhero will love this superhero mask. And the best bit? You don’t need to be a dab hand at sewing to make this. In fact, you can get away without sewing at all.
You will need:
- Fabric in various colours. Your best option for avoiding sewing is felt. You can get different weights and thicknesses. Choose a thicker felt for the mask itself, and lighter weight fabric to decorate your mask.
- Fabric glue
- Sharp scissors
- A pencil or washable fabric marker
- Pins would make your life a lot easier, but they are not essential
- Elastic
Making Your Mask
I have recommended using a thick 3mm felt for these masks. It is more sturdy than the thinner stuff, and will stand up to all those superhero adventures. Felt will last longer than paper and card, but if you need a quick mask or project to keep the kids entertained, then paper and card will work just fine. In the interest of keeping things simple, I will assume you have chosen fabric for the remainder of the blog.
Download the mask template, and choose which mask you’d like to make. Carefully cut it out, and pin it to your fabric. If you don’t have any pins, hold it steady with one hand and draw around the template with a pencil or washable fabric marker with the other. Get the kids involved with this bit. It’s their mask after all, right?
Carefully cut out your mask. Don’t forget the eyes and the elastic holes on either side.
Add Some Decoration
At the back of the template document, there is a page of superhero shapes in various sizes. If you’d like to decorate your mask with a few shapes, find the right page and cut out any shapes you’d like. Draw around these or pin them to the colour felt you’d like and cut them out in the same manner as the mask itself. Stick these on the front of your mask using the glue (or you can sew them on if you’d prefer). Make sure you use fabric glue here. Using standard school glue will make your mask hard and brittle when it dries completely. Fabric glue will be more flexible when it is dry.
Attach a piece of elastic to one side of the mask. Get your budding superhero to hold the mask up to their face and measure how much elastic you need to go around the back of their head. Make sure it is tight enough to hold the mask in place. Add about 5cm or so for adjusting and tying, and trim the elastic. Tie it to the other side of the mask, and check it fits nicely. Adjust as necessary. Adding a little bit of glue to the knots will make sure they stay secure, but is best avoided if you want to adjust the length of the elastic in the future.
