I’ve saved the best for last! This dragon sock puppet is by far my favourite. It is not the quickest, or easiest of crafts. But it is a lot of fun, and has plenty of play value when the crafting is done.
This is the kind of craft you need patience for. There is a lot of waiting for glue to dry, but that could work in your favour. For kids that don’t have a long attention span, bite sized additions to this sock puppet would keep their attention between other games and activities.
You will need:
- a sock
- pompoms
- pipe cleaner
- cotton wool
- elastic bands or scrap yarn for tying
- googly eyes
- sturdy card
- felt for the wings and tongue
- glitter glue (or glitter)
- glue
- scissors
- pins would be helpful, but not necessarily essential.
Dragon Nose…
Start by putting a piece of cotton wool in the toe of your sock. This will form the dragons nose. How much you need will depend on how big your sock is. Play around with it, manipulating it into a dragon nose shape.
Glue a couple of pompoms to the top of your dragons nose. These will become the dragons nostrils.
Fold the top of top of your sock over these pompoms and glue in place. This is quite tricky, so have a bit of patience here.
I used pegs initially to hold everything together. As I checked them, I found the sock was sticking to the peg rather than the pompoms and sock as it was supposed to. I found pins did a better job of holding it together.
In an ideal world, you will leave this until the glue has completely set. That said, with pins in place, you can move onto the next stage. If you choose to move on, please be careful of the pins in your dragon’s nose.
…and ears
To make your dragon’s ears, pinch a section at either side of the head and secure with elastic bands. Cut a pipe cleaner in half. Wrap one half around each ear, hiding the elastic band.
Lets see about those eyes…
The eyes are created using pompoms.
Glue two pompoms together. Add a googly eye to the front of one of these pompoms.
Allow these to dry for as long as possible.
Once these are dry enough to handle, glue them to the top of the head, between the ears.
Cut two horns from white felt. Glue these to the back of the eyes, in an upright position. Leave it to dry.
Finishing touches
The teeth are cut from white felt, and are a similar shape and size to the horns.
Glue a tooth to each side of the mouth, below the nostrils.
Cut the fire out of yellow felt. Use your imagination for the shape of the fire, but make sure that the base of it is narrower than the heel of the sock.
Add decoration using glitter glue. If you don’t have any glitter glue, spread a thin line of glitter along the fire and sprinkle glitter on that.
Fabric markers would work just as well if you’d prefer.
Put a small amount of glue on the back of the fire, and attach it to the heel of your sock. It should appear to be coming out go the dragons mouth. Leave it to dry.
Cut wing shapes from felt.
Decorate it them glitter glue (or alternatives), as you did for the fire. Leave it to dry.
Attach the wings to either side of your dragon with a spot of glue. Leave it to dry.
