Endless Cube

This endless cube is truly fascinating. It is important to get the cubes together in the right order to make it work as an endless cube. But follow these instructions and you’ll have made one in no time. You could even add pictures or messages to each side to really make it your own.

Happy Crafting!

you will need:

  • an A4 piece of card
  • Invisible tape
  • a ruler
  • a pencil
  • scissors

Let’s make the cubes

Mark out 2.5cm squares on your card. You will need 8 squares along one edge, and 9 along the other.

Draw numbers in each square in a “Z” shape as pictured below. This will help you to know where to cut in the next step.

Cut out your Z shapes, keeping the numbers together.

Carefully score along the lines using your scissors and a ruler. If you have a scoring tool even better!

Fold your card along the scoring lines, keeping the numbers on the outside of the cube.

Tape each edge together with a small piece of invisible tape.

You should now have 8 numbered cubes.

Now let’s make them endless

This is where it gets a little tricky! But hang in there. It’s easy if you follow everything really carefully.

You will need to tape the right cubes together in the right order. I have uploaded a video for you to follow. But if you’d prefer, I have also explained (as best I can) which cubes to tape together in which order. You might find using both will be most helpful.

Ready? Here we go!

Tape cubes 5 and 6 together. Rotate these cubes outwards so that it folds the tape you have just put on. Tape the reverse of the joint to strengthen it.

Take cubes 1 and 2 and place them on your work bench above the taped cubes 5 and 6 respectively. You should have a block of 4 cubes in front of you. Tape cubes 2 and 6 together on the outer edge, and 1 and 5 together on the outer edge. Fold the cubes out into a line, and tape the reverse of the 2 joints you have just made (1 and 5, and 2 and 6).

Repeat the process again using the other 4 cubes as follows:

Tape 7 and 8 together. Turn these out and tape the reverse of this joint. Bring cubes 3 and 4 down and place them on your work bench above 7 and 8 respectively. Tape 4 and 8 together on the outer edge. Repeat for cubes 3 and 7. Open out and tape the reverse of the joints (7 and 3, and 4 and 8).

Turn both of the squares you have made over so that the joints are on the bottom and they open upwards.

Matching up cubes 1 and 4, 2 and 3, 5 and 8, and 6 and 7, bring these 2 squares together, making sure that they open inwards. The joints should be on the outside.

Holding the squares together, turn the whole thing towards you by 90 degrees.

tape the top 2 cubes (1 and 4) together, then the bottom 2 cubes (2 and 3). Fold out your cubes to tape the reverse of this joint as before.

Make it your own

You could leave it there or you could draw pictures or write some messages. You will need 4 that measure 5cm by 5cm, and 2 that measures 10cm by 5cm.

Divide these into 2.5cm squares. Cut these squares out, and glue them onto your Endless cube.
