Painted Bread

Edible art! Let the kids make some painted bread next time they ask for a snack. This is not the healthiest of snacks, but it’s great fun as a treat occasionally, and very easy to set up.

You will need:

  • white bread
  • food colouring in any colours you like. You can use whatever you have in the cupboard. It isn’t important whether it is liquid or gel.
  • hot water (hot water will dissolve the sugar more quickly, but be careful with hot water around kids)
  • granulated sugar
  • brushes
  • bowls, or cup cake cases (one for each colour)

Start by putting a teaspoon of sugar in a cup cake case or small bowl. Add a few drops of food colouring, and a small amount of hot water. Mix well to make a syrup.

Add more water if the sugar doesn’t dissolve completely. You are aiming for a syrupy mixture, so add more water or sugar as necessary. Mix up the colours you need in separate bowls or cup cake cases.

Use the paint brushes to paint your bread. Make sure you have a bowl of water handy to wash your brushes between colours.

When you have finished admiring your painted bread, you can eat your art work.
