Giraffe Pot

It was “take your child to work” day last week. So my 12 year old had the pleasure of writing me a blog post. As a massive giraffe fan, this one was perfect for her. She gathered her materials, took the photos and took great pride in created her giraffe pot. The words are hers too. Her giraffe pot now has pride of place in her room.

So here it is. A guest post from my super crafty daughter.

Giraffe Pot

by Hattie

This Giraffe pot would be a great decoration and flower pot. It is super easy and fun to make. I loved making this.

Equipment list:

  • 4 small flower pots
  • 1 medium flower pot
  • 1 large flower pot
  • 1 wooden dowel
  • Garden paint (yellow, brown, white and black)
  • paint brushes and a mixing palette
  • marker pen for details
  • foam sheet (brown and yellow)
  • scissors
  • hot glue

To start, we are going to paint the flower pots.

Grab all of the small pots and paint them yellow. Wait until they are dry. While they are drying, paint the medium and large pots.

When you have done that, the small pots should have dried. If they have then you can now paint the brown spots on the other pots. I would start with the small ones because they have had the longest to dry. Once they have all been painted with spots, put them off to the side to let them dry.

Now cut your wooden pole to your preferred length (this will be the neck). Next, paint it the same shade of yellow as the pots. Once it has dried, put lots of brown spots like you did with the pots. Put it off to the side to dry.

Now we can do the details of the face.

Start by doing a long brown streak up to the rim of the pot slowly increasing as you go up the pot.

Then draw the eye. It can be any shape you like. I have gone for a semicircle but it does not really matter. Make sure to do this in pencil it will not work very well with a pen.

Now you need to paint in the pencil lines with your white paint. You might need to do a few coats for it to really show up. Once you are happy with the colour and the paint is dry you need to use the black paint to do the inside of the eye leave a strip of bold white a small circle in the middle.

Now I would recommend cleaning up the paint because it will get everywhere if you don’t.

Next you will make the horns and the ears

Draw the shape you want the ears on the yellow foam. Cut these out. Draw the inside of the ears from the brown foam. Glue them together.

Draw the shape of the horns from the yellow foam. Cut these out as well.

Time to put it together

Glue the horns and ears to the head pot. We tried it with pva glue, but it didn’t stick, so we used hot glue instead.

Arrange the feet how you want them. Put plenty of hot glue on the top of the feet, then stick the body pot to them.

Put loads of glue into the body pot and stick the neck down at the angle you want it.

Glue the head pot to the top of the neck pot.

I added a fabric flower to the head of my giraffe pot, You could leave it plain, or add a bow or flower if you want to.
