Children’s Sewing Lessons

Learn to use a sewing machine and make something brilliant!

Has your child been asking to learn how to sew?

Our private 1:1 sewing sessions give children the chance to learn how to use a sewing machine, develop their skills and create something they can be genuinely proud of.

Whether they’re picking up a sewing machine for the first time, looking to improve their confidence or ready to tackle a more advanced project, there’s a session to suit their experience.

Each session is tailored to the child, with plenty of individual guidance and support throughout.

Private 1:1 sewing sessions

Learning to sew is so much easier when a child has the space to ask questions, work at their own pace and have individual support.

That’s exactly what our private sewing sessions provide.

Your child will have their own sewing machine and receive one-to-one tuition throughout the session, learning practical machine sewing skills while working on a fun project.

Sessions are available at different levels, so your child can start where they’re comfortable and progress as their confidence grows.

Beginner Sewing Session

Make a fabric headband or roll up pencil case

2 hours · £45

Never used a sewing machine before?

This is the perfect place to start.

Your child will be introduced to the basics of machine sewing and learn how to safely and confidently use a sewing machine while creating their own fabric headband or roll up pencil case.

They’ll learn skills including:

  • Getting familiar with the sewing machine
  • Basic machine safety
  • Controlling the fabric and foot pedal
  • Sewing straight seams
  • Starting and finishing seams
  • Following simple instructions
  • Working with fabric
  • Completing a finished project

No previous sewing experience needed.

Improver Sewing Session

Make an envelope bag

2 hours · £65

Ready to take their sewing skills a little further?

In this session, children will build on their basic machine sewing skills while making a practical envelope-style bag.

They’ll develop their confidence with the sewing machine and learn how to work more independently through a complete project.

This session is ideal for children who have already used a sewing machine and are comfortable with the basics.

Improver Sewing Session

Make a zipped box purse

2 hours · £65

Ready to try something a little more challenging?

Children will learn how to make their own zipped box purse while developing their machine sewing skills.

Adding a zip introduces a new technique and gives children the opportunity to work on their accuracy and confidence.

Previous sewing machine experience is required.

Improver Sewing Session

Add embellishments to clothing

2 hours · £65

Give an old or plain item of clothing a creative makeover!

This session allows children to explore how sewing can be used to personalise and transform clothes. They’ll learn techniques for adding embellishments and decorative details while developing their confidence with the sewing machine.

This is a great option for children who already have some sewing experience and want to explore their own creativity.

Previous sewing machine experience is required.

Advanced Sewing Session

Make a tiered dress or a shoulder bag with adjustable strap

5 hours (split across 2 or 3 sessions) · £150

Ready for a bigger sewing challenge?

This extended 1:1 session gives children the opportunity to create their own tiered dress while putting their sewing skills into practice.

Over the course of the session, they’ll work through a more complex project and develop their understanding of construction, accuracy and working through multiple stages to create a finished garment or accessory.

This session is aimed at children with good previous sewing machine experience who are ready to take on a more advanced project.

Why 1:1 sewing?

A private sewing session gives your child the time and attention they need to really get to grips with the sewing machine.

Individual support

There’s no need to keep up with a group. Your child can ask questions whenever they need to and receive help with the things they find tricky.

Learn at their own pace

Some children pick up sewing quickly, while others need a little more time and practice. 1:1 tuition allows the session to work around your child.

Build real skills

These aren’t simply craft sessions where someone else does the difficult bits. Your child will be learning practical machine sewing skills that they can continue to develop.

Create something they love

Every session has a project to work towards, giving children a real sense of achievement when they finish.

Sewing skills they’ll have for life

Learning to sew can give children much more than a finished project.

It can help develop:

🎨 Creativity
Design, personalise and make something that’s uniquely theirs.

🧠 Concentration
Follow instructions, work carefully and focus on each stage of a project.

💪 Confidence
Mastering a sewing machine is a fantastic confidence boost.

🛠️ Problem solving
Learn what to do when something doesn’t go quite to plan.

✨ Independence
Develop the skills and confidence to start creating their own projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the sewing sessions private?

Yes. These are 1:1 sessions, giving your child individual tuition and support throughout.

Does my child need their own sewing machine?

No. A sewing machine is provided for the session, along with the materials needed for the chosen project.

What age are the sewing sessions for?

The sessions are designed for children and young people, with suitability depending on the individual child and the project.

If you’re unsure whether a particular session is suitable for your child, please get in touch before booking.

My child has never used a sewing machine. Which session should I book?

The Beginner Headband session is the best place to start. They’ll be introduced to the sewing machine and learn the basic skills they need in a supportive 1:1 environment.

My child has sewn before but hasn’t used a machine much. Which session should I choose?

We recommend starting with the Beginner session if they’re not yet confident using a sewing machine. If they’re already comfortable with the basics, an Improver session may be suitable.

If you’re unsure, just ask and we can help you choose.

Can my child bring their own fabric or clothing?

This depends on the project. For sessions where children are working with their own clothing or materials, the booking information will explain what they need to bring.

Can my child progress through the different levels?

Absolutely! The sessions are designed to allow children to build their skills over time.

They can start with the beginner session, move on to improver projects and eventually take on more advanced challenges as their confidence develops.

How long are the sessions?

Most sessions are 2 hours, although the advanced tiered dress session is 5 hours because of the additional time needed to complete the project. The 5 hours will be split across 2 or 3 sessions.
