Festive Foil Decorations

These shiny foil decorations are ideal for hanging in windows, around your room or on your tree. These easy decorations offer a wonderful way to engage your children in crafting. With simple materials you likely already have at home, this creative activity will keep them entertained this festive season.

You will need…

  • Cardboard. Corrugated cardboard from old boxes works best here.
  • Glue. Either standard pva glue, or cool melt hot glue
  • Pencil
  • Good quality kitchen foil
  • Colouring pens

Let’s get making…

Cut your cardboard to size. Our cardboard is approximately 10-15 cm wide. You can choose whatever size you’d like, but remember you will need to wrap the front of your cardboard in foil later on, so consider the width of your foil when choosing the size of your decoration.

Draw a simple design. Be careful not to put too much detail on your image. The lines will need to be drawn in glue, so small details will be lost. The snowman in our example is perhaps a little too much detail.

Draw you design in glue. Whether you use standard pva, or (cool melt) hot glue is totally up to you. Hot glue will dry much quicker, but children will need help with this step. If they have the patience to wait for the glue to dry, then pva will be the better option.

Once dry, wrap your design in foil, carefully rubbing along the glue lines to show the image. Be careful not to tear the foil here.

Colour in your design, adding string for hanging if you’d like.
